Swedish Startup Sqore Launches Awards to Break the Bias in Recruitment

Introducing the Sqore Awards

Sqore was launched with the aim of removing the bias in recruitment. These awards are a step forward in showing the world that talent is available in all shapes, ages, and countries

Sqore wants to open up the doors for people who may never have gotten the chance to be interviewed based on their CV alone but have the talent.

Sqore will launch 5 different competitions on March 1, 2016, one in each one of the following countries: India, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The tests include challenges that will measure 5 skills from analytical thinking; diagrammatic, numerical, and verbal reasoning; and general knowledge. Sqore’s system ranks the top performers to determine the finalists, who then will be interviewed before a winner is announced. One award will be granted per country, and Sqore will help the winners get interviews with two companies of their choosing.

All competitions open on March 1, 2016.

Bias in Recruitment

There may be different opinions regarding what makes a good candidate, but there seems to be a certain consensus that many people do not get the chance to get into a recruitment process due to some form of bias be it conscious or subconscious.

Organizations seem to make assumptions that older employees may be less flexible and less willing to adapt. Female job applicants face sexism when they are competing in the labor market. Stories from recruiters suggest that prejudice and discrimination are still commonplace to job seekers with different racial backgrounds. And prior work experience or studies in a similar field does not necessarily prove success or competence in those areas and vice-versa.

These biases have massive implications for our society as a whole. The goal should be not to look at the skills people don’t have but to look at the skills and experience they do have. Those may be valuable to an organization.

Sqore’s aim is to encourage behavioral change in organizations, so they open their recruitment opportunities to everyone regardless of age, gender, education, country of origin, or work experience. Skills and talents shouldn't be wasted because of someone's personal circumstances.
