Roofing systems have enormous potential to contribute to green building practices.

On July 22, Buff Exteriors LLC received its Certified Green Roofer designation from GAF, the largest roofing manufacturer in the United States. GAF designed the Certified Green Roofer Program in conjunction with the US Green Building Council to recognize roofing companies that are emerging as industry leaders for their commitment to sustainable business practices.

Over the course of the designation process, employees and management at Buff Exteriors LLC took part in USGBC-approved training on the myriad of important factors that make roofing systems crucial components of green housing. These training sessions educated Buff Exteriors LLC team members on the advanced technology behind cool roofing, techniques for creating attic ventilation that improves the quality of indoor air, and the importance of recycling asphalt shingles. These efforts reduce energy expenditure and keep waste from roofing products from ending up in landfills.

Buff Exteriors LLC also made a commitment to use these lessons to run sustainable job sites. They also agreed to participate regularly in their local chapter of USGBC chapter to continue their education on the best modern green building practices.

Roofing systems have enormous potential to contribute to green building practices. A professionally installed asphalt shingle roofing system can increase the durability of a home by controlling moisture. Cool roofing techniques can improve energy efficiency by allowing HVAC systems to work less to keep homes temperate. Proper attic ventilation also eases the strain on HVAC systems and can help to improve indoor air quality as well as reduce the formation of ice dams.

When asphalt shingles are too torn up to be replaced with a new roofing system, they can almost always be recycled into asphalt pavement to create a new road. Metal roofs can also be recycled in most instances, and shingles on slate roofs last so long that they can usually just be used again.

“We are excited to have received the Certified Green Roofer designation from GAF," said Gregg Buffington, President of Buff Exteriors LLC. "Every year 11 million tons of shingle waste is generated in our country, and we are proud to do our part in reducing that number."
