Expert fitness business consultant and creator of the popular fitness marketing blog PTPower.com, Bedros Keuilian, has been around and started enough personal training businesses to know what works and what doesn’t. That’s why he is urging personal trainers who are looking into starting a fitness business to shy away from starting one with a partner.

He explains, “One of the biggest mistakes I see personal trainers making when they’re ready to start their own fitness business is that they partner up with someone who doesn’t bring anything to the table and ultimately brings them and their new business under without even getting started. Unless the person you’re going into business with has a set of useful skills that you don’t possess- it’s not worth the hassle and the debt that you’ll run into.”

Keuilian admits that having two personal trainers go into business together is like “having two chefs in the kitchen”, if they both have the same business knowledge and aren’t able to diversify their roles as owner. Business matters tend to get one sided when the roles aren’t defined and causes one person to have to work harder than the other, which brings out bitterness and resentment.

Before considering any kind of partnership, Keuilian recommends that a personal trainer ask themselves these two questions, “What value would this partner bring to the business that I don’t already bring?”, and “If things don’t work out, what will our exit strategy be?” Simply investing money is not a good enough reason to sign someone on as a partner. They should be able to contribute value in matters like operating the business or handle marketing in order for the partnership to stay successful.
