PathoGenetix™, Inc., a commercial-stage developer of an automated system for rapid bacterial identification, will present the RESOLUTION™ Microbial Genotyping System for the first time at the 2013 International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) Annual Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, July 28-31, 2013. The RESOLUTION System, which identifies pathogens in enriched food samples in five hours and provides strain level resolution comparable to pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), will be demonstrated in the exhibit hall (booth #902) and in private meetings. Two new research studies detailing the differentiation and typing of Salmonella strains, from both pure culture and complex “presumptive positive” food samples, will be presented in IAFP poster sessions.
PathoGenetix also will make available research results demonstrating the use of Genome Sequence Scanning™ (GSS™), the technology underlying the RESOLUTION System, to identify and differentiate virulent Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The ability of GSS to reliably differentiate virulent STECs has significant implications for food producers required to test their products for pathogens having certain virulence characteristics. Current screening methods have a high “false positive” rate for detection of Big 6 E. coli due to the commingling of virulence factors that can be present in an enriched food sample. The RESOLUTION System could be used as a confirmatory method for Big 6 STEC screening assays, and potentially reduce the loss of product associated with false positive results from current STEC screening tests.
PathoGenetix’s Genome Sequence Scanning works from complex mixtures or from pure culture isolates, and automates the identification process from sample preparation through data analysis to provide actionable information in five hours. GSS is a breakthrough in microbial identification with broad applicability in food safety, research, industrial microbiology and clinical diagnostics. The RESOLUTION Microbial Genotyping System is the first commercial application of GSS technology, and will be available in 2014 for use in food safety testing and foodborne illness outbreak investigation. PathoGenetix has an agreement to place a beta instrument with one government collaboration partner, and is in discussion with other potential government and industry beta evaluation sites. Performance testing and submission to AOAC of the instrument, assays and protocols is planned for 2014.
