A status conference to discuss state-filed Stryker lawsuits ( is scheduled to get underway this week in New Jersey Superior Court, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports.

According to a Calendar posted on the Court’s website, parties involved in the Bergen County litigation will congregate for the meeting on January 27th, 2015 at 9:00 a.m., at which time they will discuss matters related to the Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck hip stems. Lawsuits filed in this consolidated proceeding allege similarly painful and debilitating complications caused by the hip replacements, which contain metal components that were shown to fret and corrode at the modular-neck junction. Stryker Hip Recall

According to court documents updated in January, nearly 2,200 Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II hip lawsuits are now pending in Bergen County Superior Court. Claims filed in the New Jersey litigation allege pain, swelling, loss of mobility and complications of metallosis that resulted from the metal hip devices, which were subject to a voluntarily recall in July 2012 by their manufacturer, Stryker Orthopaedics. Following the recall, the company advised on its website that all recipients undergo routine blood tests and cross-sectional imaging to monitor for elevated metal ion levels.*

On November 3, 2014, the terms of a Stryker hip settlement program were announced in New Jersey Superior Court that could resolve many of the lawsuits filed in that litigation, as well as in a federal proceeding underway in the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota. (In re: Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation, No. 244)

As per the settlement, each eligible claimant who has had their Stryker Rejuvenate or ABG II modular-neck hip stem revised prior to November 3, 2014 would receive $300,000 per failed implant, which could vary depending on certain deductions and enhancements based on the particulars of each case. Stryker plaintiffs who allegedly suffered complications during revision surgery, or needed future surgeries because of problems with the hip may receive additional compensation, for example. The settlement also stipulates that individuals who need a revision surgery but are medically unable to do so would be awarded compensation, court records indicate.

According to recent documents, plaintiffs who plan to enroll in the Stryker hip lawsuit settlement and agree to accept its terms have until March 2, 2015 to do so. Claimants may begin to receive compensation later this summer.

Individuals who were allegedly injured by the Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems may be eligible to pursue their own cases against the manufacturer.
