“The Gardner Expressway will probably cause the most frustration for commuters,” says Lance Bradshaw, president and CEO of Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. “However, there are many other routes that will also be affected by the construction.”
Some of the projects are slated to last until December of 2016, with a break between June and August of 2015 to accommodate the Pan Am Games, so drivers have to recognize that there will be delays. In addition, summers in Toronto are typically known for heavy construction, and with 130 high-rise building projects already slated to happen this year on top of the road repairs, commuting could possibly become a nightmare for anyone driving in and out of the city on a daily basis. Roadwork can be timely, but these projects are necessary,” Bradshaw adds. “That means commuters will have to find different modes of travel, plan out different routes, carpool, or travel at low traffic volume times of the day whenever possible.”
Bradshaw notes that pothole repair will also be a huge issue for Toronto, with over 120,000 having already been filled this year—double the amount as this time last year. Toronto will also spend an additional $60.0 million on upgrading the infrastructure of water and sewer mains.
