artnet Auctions presents: Summer Ephemera Sale
New York/Berlin (PRWEB) August 08, 2013 -- artnet Auctions is pleased to announce the Summer Ephemera Sale, an extensive auction of scarce and unusual art collectibles. Featuring over 100 pieces, this sale presents an exciting opportunity to bid on and buy hard-to-find Pop Art posters and memorabilia, hand-painted clothing by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and many other one-of-a-kind drawings and exciting multiples.
One of the highlights of the sale is Andy Warhol’s complete set of 18 offset lithographs Wild Raspberries (1959), 17 of which are sumptuously hand-colored and 4 that are extensively gold leafed. Estimated at US$35,000–55,000, this copy of the fictitious cookbook, with humorous recipes penned by Warhol’s gal pal, socialite Suzie Frankfurt, includes three plates hand-signed by the artist and dedicated to an important gallerist of the period, Gerald Kornblau. This particular copy of the book was later reproduced in the publication Pre-Pop Andy Warhol, and supporting letters and documents from the publisher, Random House, accompany the piece.
There is no shortage of exciting Warhol memorabilia in this sale. One of Warhol’s favorite haunts was Studio 54, the ultimate celebrity-studded disco of the late 1970s. The sale includes a Studio 54 brochure that Warhol signed and embellished with a drawing of a soup can and dollar signs, estimated at US$8,000–10,000. Also for sale are three unique acetates that were the original negatives for some of Warhol’s most famous prints. One acetate features Paloma Picasso in a rare nude pose (eventually cropped to a conservative headshot in the final print), and is estimated at US$7,000–10,000.
A standout work in the sale is a hand-painted sweatshirt by Jean-Michel Basquiat, estimated at US$25,000–30,000. Using the shirt as a canvas, Basquiat created this piece for a friend who held on to it for over 30 years. This was typical for Basquiat who, after being kicked out of his house as a teen, supported himself by selling handmade postcards and painted shirts in the streets of New York. The work’s owner later recalled Basquiat’s spontaneous style of working: “[He] came in with a bag of white sweatshirts…He lined up 5–6 on the floor next to each other. Painted them all very quickly seemingly without thought. Got paint on his clothes. Didn't care...”
The sale also features a hand-drawn painter’s cap by Keith Haring with his signature “Radiant Baby.” The piece was signed by the artist in 1989 when he was working on a series of public murals in Chicago, and is estimated at US$1,500–2,500. Other clothing items in the sale include a silk scarf by George Condo, estimated at US$1,200–1,500; a shawl designed and hand-signed by Frank Stella, estimated at US$1,500–2,000; and a signed brooch designed by Roy Lichtenstein, estimated at US$4,500–5,000.
Unusual, domestic-themed objects are also included in the sale. A rare pair of rice bowls by Keith Haring, produced for his short-lived Tokyo Pop Shop in 1987, estimated at US$6,000–$8,000, feature whimsical black fish depicted in Haring’s characteristically playful style. Also included in the sale are six 1969 silkscreened paper plates by Roy Lichtenstein, estimated at US$1,200–1,500.
