Sunset Malibu Comments on New Study Claiming Sex “Addiction” Is No Addiction
Malibu, CA (PRWEB) July 25, 2013 -- A recent study out of UCLA suggests that sex addiction is not an addictive disorder. A brain study of fifty two individuals showed no conclusive evidence that the brain of those who view sexually explicit materials reacts to that information as an addict’s brain does. This calls into question the claim that approximately 16 million people suffer from sex addiction.
“This result is no surprise,” said Richard Taite, co-author of the Amazon bestselling book Ending Addiction for Good. “When you work with addicts on a daily basis, you see the difference in these problems. Someone who is addicted to prescription medication behaves and thinks differently than someone who claims to be a sex addict. The science bears this out. Addiction to substances is real. Depression and anxiety are real and can be addressed in depression treatment facilities. We can see their impact on the brain. But we also see a lot of people who get caught with their pants down claiming sex addiction – and that belittles the very real experience of true addicts.”
Addiction researcher Constance Scharff, PhD, concurs. “There are solid scientific reasons why sex addiction was not added to the new release of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. I think we have to be very careful about how we use the term addict and addiction, to ensure that we are talking about bona fide disorders.”
Dr. Scharff continues, “Sunset Malibu Treatment Center offers depression treatment in Los Angeles, and we are selective in what we address. Sunset Malibu does not seek to create revenue streams by trying to create new addictions. Certainly, if sexual dysfunction or a propensity toward infidelity fuels your addiction to drugs or alcohol, we will help you address those issues, but we do not accept clients who claim to be sex addicts only. There’s no need for residential treatment for that kind of problem.”
