Part history, part biography, Susan Savion’s new book presents valuable resource about this inspiring woman

Author Susan Savion was working on a book of women’s quotes but, when she asked Sally Roesch Wagner, the woman who did her doctorate on Matilda Joslyn Gage, for quotes from her, Savion was offered such a vast wealth of relevant passages that she decided to dedicate an entire book, the book “Quoting Matilda” (published by AuthorHouse), to Gage’s passionate words.

“Gage was a fascinating woman whose words and biography deserve to be known by the world,” says Savion. Gage was left out of the history books because she was deemed too radical for her time. Yet she was involved in numerous social justice activities, including women's rights, abolition, the rights of Native Americans and many other causes, including the role of women in religious institutions. She urged many others to get involved in the political process.

A contemporary of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Gage is part of the triumvirate who contributed so much to the early women’s movement. “Quoting Matilda” is a book of quotes from her that also works as a resource book offering an easy source of information about this little-known activist, relating her history and the various movements with which she was involved. The book’s many images of Matilda and her world entice the reader to explore a slice of this time in history. There is a pertinent introduction from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a strong women's advocate herself. These factors should appeal to women's studies students.

More than a mere “quotes” book, “Quoting Matilda” is a book that is part history, part biography that not only contains quotes with important messages, it also reveals the life of a woman who was lost to history for so long. “Many young persons do not realize the struggles their predecessors went through to achieve the rights and status women have today,” says Savion, “Positive role models from history are strong incentives to continue the work that still needs to be done.”
