Sylvia C. Stowers’ New Novel Shows Effects of Living with Secrets
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (PRWEB) August 27, 2015 -- Set within the fervor of the Vietnam War, the new fiction “Shadows of Us” (published by Archway Publishing) by author Sylvia C. Stowers tells the story of several individuals caught up in money and power, who attempt to rise above the circumstances of their time.
“It’s a story of people living as shadows of themselves,” Stowers says of her book. “In other words, (they are) not living as their best selves. Some shadows are motivated by greed. Some are a result of self-loathing. All shadows in the story are inextricably linked to the characters’ histories and societal pressures of the time.”
Readers encounter six characters through whom the circumstances of 1960s American life are laid bare. Eileen is an ambitious clairvoyant who seeks personal and professional challenges. Carl is a talented and charming baseball player who manages to keep his biggest secret from the public and his wife, Susan, a lawyer whose lust for life is only surpassed by her lust for love and acceptance.
Carol is a powerful district attorney for the city of San Diego. She hides secret details with a silent business partner and hopes to disappear to the Cayman Islands without leaving any trace of herself behind. And Alan is a therapist who is low-key, handsome, friendly, gay and the keeper of all secrets. Each character plays an integral role in the bigger picture of “Shadows of Us,” by either knowing of or keeping another’s secret.
“The book is a continuum of societal changes,” Stowers says. “It is a looking glass, so to speak, of (the consequences of) greed and selling of self to obtain status and success at any point.”
