UOSSM Expresses Concern Over the Delivery of the U.N. Humanitarian Aid Inside Syria, Asks the U.N. to Prioritize the Humanitarian Aid to the Most Devastated Areas
(PRWEB) March 24, 2014 -- While UOSSM appreciates the efforts carried out by the four U.N. agencies participating in the joined convoy, to deliver humanitarian aid inside Qamishli province in Syria, it asks the U.N. to extend the humanitarian missions to the heavily devastated and besieged areas, mostly, are under the control of opposition.
According to a report by Reuters, published on March 20th 2014, tilted,”First U.N. aid trucks cross from Turkey into Syria” U.N. regional Humanitarian Coordinator Nigel Fisher says trucks loaded with food supplies, blankets, mattresses, family kits and medical supplies bound for the Syrian city of Qamishli are leaving the Turkish border crossing at Nusaybin on Thursday.” The same report raised the doubts of whether these humanitarian aid will reach the most urgently in need Syrians.“ But with the convoy heading to a region controlled by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, doubts remained whether those in rebel-held areas most urgently in need would benefit.”

Dr Tawfik Chamaa, UOSSM spokesperson, said; “Surely, the delivery of the humanitarian aid inside Syria, is a promising step that, if managed appropriately, will lead to an impressive results. However, given the facts, that we have limited resources, with extensive needs in the devastated areas inside Syria, we expect the U.N. to utilize a delivery plan that will guarantee the maximum benefit to large sections of people in need. For that reason, we think that U.N. should coordinate the humanitarian works with the local NGOs, which are deeply involved in the relief efforts.“ in a more details, Dr Chamaa, said, “ Areas that are under the control of the opposition are the mostly devastated areas, people are in dire needs for medicine, food, blankets, and other daily livings. By delivering the aid to areas under Syrian government control, like Qamishli, which is barely affected by the crisis, U.N. is depriving the opposition controlled areas of possible relief.“ Asking the U.N. to reconsider its delivery plan, Dr Chamaa, said,”It is crucial that U.N prioritize the delivery of aid to the Aleppo, Damascus suburb, Al-yamook, Homs, Deir Ezzor, areas that have been under tight siege for more than 2 years, and the heavily affected areas. We are in the UOSSM willing and ready to collaborate the relief efforts with the U.N. inside the country.”
