As auto accident lawyers and advocates for child safety, The Tapella & Eberspacher Law Firm has joined the National Highway Traffic Administration’s (NHTSA) most recent initiative to prevent child heatstroke death, which asks, ‘Where’s Baby? Look Before You Lock.’

“These tragedies are always preventable,” said attorney and firm partner William Tapella.

“Our goal is not just to bring awareness to the dangers of leaving a child in a hot car but to join the NHTSA in educating the public about what they can do to make sure their child doesn’t suffer heatstroke, like too many others have. It’s just as simple as checking for your child before you leave your vehicle. If we can save one life by helping to promote this campaign then we’ve done what we set out to do,” Tapella said.

The NHTSA first rolled out ‘Look Before You Lock’ in 2012, but refreshed its momentum by discussing the goals of the initiative in Washington on July 24 (1).

The NHTSA has teamed with a number of different organizations and individuals for the campaign, including child advocates and early learning providers at the Rosemount Early Childhood Development Center in Northwest Washington (2).

According to an NHTSA press release, 44 children died after they were left unattended in overheated vehicles in 2013, while so far this year 17 deaths have been reported (3).
The Tapella & Eberspacher Law Firm hopes that other organizations will join the NHTSA’s movement and speak publicly about precautions that can be taken to prevent child heatstroke.

“Every caretaker should heed this message, not just parents. Remind anyone who watches your child to look before they lock—it could save your child’s life,” Tapella said.
