Malibu, California-based Adolescent Drug Rehab Treatment Center, Paradigm Malibu, Announces their “Team Spotlight” Series of Publications
Malibu, California (PRWEB) July 05, 2013 -- Melissa holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from San Diego State University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Governor’s College. Melissa specializes in the dual diagnosis of trauma and addiction, as well as Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
As a therapist for Paradigm Malibu, Melissa focuses on her model for non-violent communicative drug treatment for teens. She teaches teens how to listen empathically and communicate clearly and effectively.
“We do everything we do to meet a need,” Melissa said. “We need to learn to become clearer about what our own needs are and then not be afraid to ask that those needs be met,” Melissa said.
Melissa teaches teens at Paradigm Malibu to be considerate of each others’ needs and to de-escalate angry or hostile communication by acting compassionately toward one another. Her step-by-step process involves stopping when agitated, recognizing a negative emotion and then using that emotion to gain an intrinsic understanding of what needs are not being met. Once those needs have been identified, she suggests that teens ask for what they want and be prepared for the response, regardless of the outcome.
“Communication is just one facet of what we focus on at Paradigm,” Melissa said. “I’m very passionate about helping troubled adolescents to recover and prosper in all areas of their lives – mind, body and spirit,” Melissa said.
Prior to her work with Paradigm Malibu, Melissa conducted research for Veteran’s Affairs where she counseled active duty Marines struggling with trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). She has also served as an in-home therapist for Jewish Family and Children’s Services where she conducted parenting classes and family reunification services.
During her time off, Melissa enjoys focusing on her own holistic fitness. She enjoys hot yoga, diet and nutrition, and other health-related activities.
