Detroit Car Accident Attorney Gary Bloom Weighs in on Report about Texting and Driving Dangers among Older Drivers
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) January 11, 2015 -- Commenting on a recent Detroit Free Press article detailing the results of a Wayne State University study about the dangers of texting while driving among older drivers, Detroit car accident lawyer Gary Bloom said today the study’s findings are further evidence that distracted driving poses dangers to drivers of all ages.
Bloom, an experienced car accident attorney in Detroit at the Law Offices of Gary Bloom, based his comments on a December 18, 2014 article, “Study: Parents worse than teens at texting while driving,” published by the Detroit Free Press. The article reports that researchers from Wayne State University’s Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy recently found that as drivers aged, their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle while texting steadily decreased.
“For years, it has been no secret how dangerous texting while driving can be for Michigan drivers. It’s a reckless behavior that far too many drivers engage in, sometimes several times every day, without fear of consequence,” Bloom said. “Texting while driving is a top cause of Michigan car accidents. Researchers have found that drivers, as they age, may be statistically more likely to cause a car accident while distracted.”
According to the Detroit Free Press article, Wayne State University researchers observed participants who claimed to be proficient at one-handed texting in a recent study. On average, the Detroit Free Press reports researchers to have found that 50 percent of participants crossed from one lane to another while texting and driving.
Among older drivers, researchers found that 80 percent of drivers between ages 35 and 44 crossed lines while driving, according to the article. Furthermore, the Detroit Free Press article indicates that 100 percent of drivers between ages 45 and 59 crossed traffic lanes while texting and driving as part of the study.
Researchers told the Detroit Free Press that while it remains unclear why the dangers of texting while driving increased with age, it’s possible that drivers are unable to manage the cognitive demands of multitasking as they get older. In addition, according to the article, older drivers may spend more time looking at their phones instead of the road.
“No matter the reason why the risks of texting and driving increase as drivers get older, this study serves as yet another reminder that drivers of all ages should refrain from driving while distracted on Michigan roadways,” said Bloom. “Texting and driving is against the law. Those who have been injured or lost a loved a loved one due to a texting driver have legal rights and may be able to recover compensation for their losses with the help of an experienced attorney.”
