New Automotive Technology Presents Significant Threat to Driver Safety Says Auto Accident Lawyer David Eichholz
SAVANNAH, GA (PRWEB) August 25, 2014 -- The auto accident attorneys at The Eichholz Law Firm are investigating claims that computer hackers are attempting to remotely access and control vehicles using new technology available in late model vehicles.
An August 8, 2014 article from Forbes highlighted security weaknesses in the technology used in newer vehicles which were brought to light by altruistic hackers at recent Def Con and Black Hat conferences. Information security analysts at these conferences developed a list of action points for auto makers to use in developing hacker-proof technologies for cars. These points included the development of industry technology standards, segmentation to prevent a hacker from gaining access to multiple vehicle systems, secure software updating systems, responsible breach disclosure programs, and black box recorders which could log security breaches.
Auto accident attorney David Eichholz is concerned that vehicle manufacturers are not doing enough to address these security threats to vehicles.
“Technologies like Bluetooth and wireless Internet make cars attractive to both buyers and hackers,” says Eichholz. “Lives are at stake if someone with malicious intent were able to access a vehicle’s braking or steering systems. Auto manufacturers have a responsibility to consumers to ensure that this cannot happen.”
While hackers have not yet gained access to vehicles remotely, security experts believe that day is coming. An August 6, 2014 article from Wired.com reported that at the same conference, hacking experts Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek released a 92-page paper detailing the areas where 24 popular vehicles are vulnerable to hackers. Miller and Valasek have shared this report with the Department of Transportation, the Society of Automobile Engineers, and major auto manufacturers in hopes that the vulnerabilities they identified will be remedied.
In light of this report, The Eichholz Law Firm is continuing to watch for technological advancements and information security developments which may pose threats to consumer safety.
