New memoir chronicles life of ‘The Girl with the Lion Heart’
DREXEL HILL, Pa. (PRWEB) March 25, 2015 -- Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder that causes red blood cells to be shaped like a sickle, as opposed to their regular donut shape. These misshaped cells can lead to blocked blood flow, organ damage and excruciating pain. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), 70,000-100,000 Americans suffer from sickle cell anemia. Author Elvelyna B. Beaubrun is one of these Americans.
Beaubrun tells her inspiring story in her new memoir “The Girl with the Lion Heart: "The Resilient Life of a Champion" Vol. 1 Based on a True Story” (published by Trafford Publishing), in which she discusses her battle with sickle cell anemia and the courage it has given her. It is her hope to raise awareness of this condition worldwide. Beaubrun was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia when she was an infant and has fought with the disorder her entire life. Despite the pain the disease carries with it, Beaubrun said she never let it break her or keep her down; she used the disease to make her stronger.

Elvelyna B. Beaubrun, now 22 years old, was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia as an infant. She has gone on to be a gold medalist public speaker, International Havertown Optimist Club scholarship recipient, Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society member, former student on the dean’s and president’s list at Delaware County Community College and is a current nursing student attending Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions.
