This case was all about the conscious decisions of these cigarette companies and their efforts to addict children and teenagers to a lifetime of smoking.
St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) March 01, 2017
Eric Roslansky, trial attorney with The Ruth Law Team, and co-council Brent Bigger recently won a significant case (Case No: 15-2451-CI filed in the Circuit Court of the Sixth Judicial Circuit - Pinellas County, Civil Division) against tobacco companies Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds. The court awarded a total of $5.8 million in damages to Roslansky and Bigger’s client (plaintiff) and other family members of a two-pack-a-day smoker who died of lung cancer as a result of nicotine addiction caused by smoking cigarettes.
Maria Joyce Brown began smoking as a teenager and died in 1995 at the age of forty-seven. According to court documents, the plaintiff, Brown’s husband, claimed the defendants’ concealment of the harmful effects of smoking led to her nicotine addiction, smoking-related disease and death, to which the jury agreed. The Florida Sixth Circuit Court awarded $1.8 million each to Brown’s husband and two children and later imposed an additional $400,000 in punitive damages against the tobacco companies for their conduct.
“This case was all about the conscious decisions of these cigarette companies and their efforts to addict children and teenagers to a lifetime of smoking,” said Roslansky, attorney for the plaintiff. “Ms. Brown was a beautiful woman, inside and out, who died far too young, leaving behind a wonderful family.”
