Thyroidmom.com Launches Thyroid Advocacy Site for Children Born With Thyroid Disorders
Raleigh, North Carolina (PRWEB) December 04, 2013 -- Thyroidmom.com founder, Blythe Clifford, was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in her late twenties while trying to conceive her first son. Her husband was diagnosed a year later with Grave's Disease (hyperthyroidism). She had no idea that children could be born with thyroid disorders, so the phone call she received days after her first son was born, diagnosing him with congenital hypothyroidism, came as a shock. She felt so alone. Then, 4 years later, her second son was born and diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism. In the fall of 2013, Blythe launched Thyroidmom.com.
According to the National Institutes of Health in the United States, one out of every 3,000 to 4,000 children is born with congenital hypothyroidism. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists asserts that an estimated 27 million Americans have thyroid disease, and about 13 million of them are undiagnosed. Yet, many people, especially the mothers of children born with hypothyroidism, feel alone in their struggles with thyroid disorders.
Thyroid Mom is written to raise awareness for all those battling thyroid disorders, but most importantly, the children who have struggled with hypothyroidism since birth. She writes openly about her struggles with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, her husband's battle with Grave's Disease, and both of her children's experiences and perseverance in growing up with congenital hypothyroidism. Given her experience as the wife and mother of children with thyroid disorders and her own experiences with hypothyroidism, she has a unique perspective.
Blythe began her involvement as an advocate by volunteering with the Magic Foundation, fielding calls from concerned parents and family members about their own child's diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism. She realized that there is still much to do and learn in order to raise awareness and disseminate the latest information. Through Thyroidmom.com, Blythe is determined to build a support network, not only for her own children, but also for all thyroid disease sufferers. In just two months, Thyroidmom.com has touched the lives of many people.
