Timber Frame Pavilions Crafted by New Energy Works Timberframers for the New Outdoor Center at the Saratoga Regional YMCA are Now Open
Farmington, NY (PRWEB) June 30, 2016 -- Saratoga Regional YMCA contracted Munter Enterprises to design and build additional outdoor spaces to meet the aspirations of the growing YMCA community. Munter Enterprises was assisted by Paone Architecture, PC in designing the multi-use, timber framed spaces. New Energy Works Timberframers crafted and raised two pavilions at the Saratoga Regional YMCA in May of 2016.
In addition to New Energy Works Timberframers and Munter Enterprises, The LA Group was brought on for site planning, and WJ Morris was responsible for excavating the property. These combined efforts resulted in the new Outdoor Center at the Saratoga Regional YMCA which provides increased capacity for summer camp programs, experiential learning, and recreational activities. The Grand Opening of the SRYMCA’s Outdoor Center was held on June 24, 2016.
The main pavilion is intended for use as an open-air classroom and community space; the second pavilion is designated for archery. “We’re excited to have additional space for new educational and experiential programs for our community. The timber frames are beautiful and functional,” said Sean Andrews, CEO of the Saratoga Regional YMCA.
For commercial or residential projects, timber frame pavilions and pergolas allow people to engage the landscape and enjoy nature while providing shelter. The YMCA’s 4,340-square-foot community pavilion was made by New Energy Works Timberframers of fresh sawn Douglas fir. It has a scissor truss design, in which the bottom chord members cross each other, connecting to the angled girts, creating a vaulted ceiling that resembles an opened pair of scissors. The archery pavilion is a post-supported rafter frame with structural timber purlins.
Timber framing is the use of heavy timbers structurally joined together through mortise and tenon, held in place with hardwood pegs, utilizing wooden brackets and braces with various truss/bent designs. The age-old craft is sought after not only for its aesthetic, but also for the longevity and efficiency it provides over more conventional building methods.
The YMCA staff is excited about the diverse programming that the new Outdoor Center will initiate, such as an adventure course with a zip line, low ropes and high ropes elements, outdoor basketball court, and a baseball field. With this additional outdoor space, the Saratoga Regional YMCA will no longer have to turn away potential summer camp participants.
