TimberTown Austin Lends Its Expertise to Helping Hand Home’s Academic Enrichment Camp
Austin, TX (PRWEB) July 11, 2014 -- TimberTown Austin is pleased to announce that owner Steve Anthony recently hosted a presentation and interactive workshop for the Helping Hand Home Academic Enrichment Summer Camp. Helping Hand Home is a local charitable organization that has been working to improve the lives of neglected and abused children in Central Texas for more than 120 years. Through donations and the help of volunteers the organization is able to provide therapy, tutoring, foster care and adoption services.
Approximately 34 children between the ages of 5-13 attended the Wood for Outdoor Living presentation. The day began at 10 am with a short 30-minute introduction from Mr. Anthony followed by a breakout session that was segmented into age groups. For an hour the children worked with wood products making name signs and birdhouses. The older children were able to learn the basic techniques of building a deck, which is one of TimberTown Austin’s specialties.
“We believe that if TimberTown associates can improve the life of just one child then it’s well worth the time and investment,” said Mr. Anthony. “Each year we try to do a little more whenever we can.” Last year TimberTown Austin participated in the Helping Hand Home Holiday Party by raising funds and toy donations for the children.
Vanessa A. Davila, Grant and Program Research Manager at Helping Hand Home for Children said, "Corporate participation from businesses like TimberTown Austin, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, BMW of Austin and General Motors provides an important educational experience for our Academic Enrichment Camp students. It’s also a community and team building experience for our corporate friends. We see it as a win-win for everybody."
The Academic Enrichment Summer Camp is a total of eight weeks long. TimberTown Austin and the other corporate partners take turns visiting on Fridays to do special hands-on projects with the kids. Each corporation brings their team for an interactive, educational opportunity that allows Helping Hand Home students to learn from the experts in their fields. Every Friday is centered around "STEM" subject matter. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) has been found to be a critical component of preparing students for an increasingly technological world and workforce. Improving students understanding of math and science is so vital that the federal government has proposed an investment of $170 million into STEM activities.
Helping Hand Home and their corporate sponsors are doing their part to improve STEM learning each Friday at the Academic Enrichment Summer Camp. To learn more about TimberTown Austin’s work within the community, please visit: http://www.timbertownaustin.com.
