Flood Law Group Now Available to Investigate Birth Defect Claims Related to Topamax
Washington, D.C. The FDA released a Drug Safety Communication (FDA Drug Safety Communication: Risk of oral clefts in children born to mothers taking Topamax (topiramate), 3/4/2011) in March of 2011, warning of the risk of oral clefts in children born of mothers who took the drug during the first trimester of their pregnancy. Topamax and topiramate are FDA approved anticonvulsant medications commonly taken to treat patients with epilepsy, or those who suffer from other seizures or serious migraines.

According to the Drug Safety Communication from the FDA, there is a higher risk that a baby will develop a cleft lip and/or palate of topiramate or a brand name such as Topamax is taken during pregnancy. The Drug Safety Communication also states that oral clefts happen early in pregnancy, often before most women realize that they are pregnant. The Drug Safety Communication from the FDA also advises that women of childbearing age seek alternate treatment options for their seizures, migraines or epilepsy due to the pregnancy risks associated with Topamax and topiramate.
