LASIK Surgeon Offering New Eye Surgery Procedure to Reduce Risk of Cornea Degeneration
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 10, 2014 -- Board-certified LASIK surgeon and ophthalmologist Dr. Farooq Ashraf, MD, FACS, has introduced the latest advanced LASIK procedure in his international clinic located in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Called LASIK XTRA®, the procedure is an additional eye treatment to prevent degenerative diseases of the cornea.
The LASIK XTRA treatment is an additional procedure performed during laser eye surgery. Once the cornea is reshaped by an excimer laser, which corrects the refractive error, riboflavin drops are applied to the exposed tissue. The corneal flap created at the beginning of LASIK surgery is replaced and then UVA illumination is applied to the eye. The ultraviolet rays cause the riboflavin to fluoresce, which causes molecular bonds to form between collagen in the cornea.
These bonds ultimately strengthen the cornea, yielding numerous benefits. LASIK XTRA can extend the longevity of LASIK results thus reducing the potential need for touch-up treatments later in life. The procedure also delays or stops the progression of degenerative diseases like keratoconus or corneal ectasia, which cause a weakened cornea the change shape and bulge out of the eye.
“I am dedicated to investing in and providing my patients with the safest and most effective technology available. I frequently upgrade our equipment and surgical options to the most advanced technology,” says Dr. Ashraf, founder and medical director of Atlanta Vision Institute in the United States and Atlanta Vision Clinic in Dubai, UAE. “LASIK XTRA is not currently available for use in the U.S. I offer the procedure in my office in Dubai and have had many patients who waited for the technology to become available. As soon as it is approved for use in America, I will introduce LASIK XTRA to my patients in Atlanta.”
