Toppers Pizza (Toppers), a fast-growing pizza chain with more than 60 units, enjoyed a record-breaking Super Bowl Sunday, reporting more than $240,000 in system-wide sales, the highest sales day in company history and an impressive 38% increase over last year.

On Super Bowl Sunday, the brand sold a staggering 7,100 pizzas, 3,200 Topperstix™, and 2,100 wings across more than 60 locations nationwide. In fact, Toppers cooked up enough pizza to cover the University of Phoenix Stadium’s field more than one and a half times.

“Historically, wings have been considered the go-to snack for the big game, but this year we are seeing a shift,” said Toppers Vice President of Marketing, Scott Iversen. “We saw our biggest sales day in 24 years on Super Bowl Sunday - it is clear that pizza is emerging as a top contender for the most popular game day party food.”

This milestone serves as a kickoff to a year that is focused on growth, with 15 expected new store openings to take place in 2015. Toppers is targeting the Midwest for its 2015 expansion efforts, including Des Moines, Iowa; Chicago, Ill., Minneapolis, Minn., and Indianapolis, Ind. With the support of dedicated multi-unit franchisees, the brand aims to reach 500 locations by 2020. According to Technomic’s “Pizza Consumer Trend Report,” of the top 50 pizza companies in the U.S., Toppers Pizza was #1 in overall sales increases from 2012 to 2013, with a 17.2% increase. The brand closed out 2014 with an even larger increase at 22.5%.

“The record-breaking success we saw during the Super Bowl is just the start for us in 2015,” said President and CEO of Toppers Scott Gittrich. “We are planning on taking Toppers to the next level this year and challenging the bigger pizza brands. With consistent growth in franchise agreements, record-breaking sales performance and a commitment to menu innovation, Toppers expects to attract even more entrepreneurs wanting to enter the segment and join our fast-growing pizza chain that breaks the mold.”

In 1991, Toppers Pizza began its quest to become the best pizza company in the world by killing it on every detail of the customer experience. Headquartered in Whitewater, Wis., Toppers takes a unique approach to the crowded pizza segment by cooking up mouthwatering specialty pizzas that start with their fresh, made-from-scratch dough, smothered in real Wisconsin cheese and finished with outrageous toppings such as French fried onions, oven-roasted tomatoes, mac ‘n cheese and tater tots. Toppers’ claim to fame comes in the form of Topperstix™, arguably the planet’s most addictively delicious cheesy breadstix. The Toppers empire encompasses more than 60 restaurants across 11 states and, with its rapid expansion, is in the midst of Midwest and national domination. In 2014, Entrepreneur Magazine ranked Toppers as one of the top 500 franchises in the U.S and QSR Magazine listed the company as one of the year’s Best Franchise Deals. In 2013, Nation’s Restaurant News declared the brand as one of the 50 breakout chains of the year and Toppers received a No. 58 spot in Pizza Today’s top 100 pizza companies.
