Hopewell, Virginia, City Point 5K Expected to Attract 1,000 Runners
Hopewell, Virginia (PRWEB) August 27, 2014 -- More than 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the 18th Annual City Point 5K River Run & Walk in Hopewell, Virginia, on October 25. The race is known for its relatively flat, scenic run along the Appomattox River and through the historic City Point community, established in 1613 by British Naval Commander Sir Thomas Dale at the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers.
Registration for the race is being managed by the Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce at http://www.hpgchamber.org.
“This year can truly be the year for a transformation from a city of hard work to a city of heart health,” says Cardiologist Cliff Morris, MD, chairman of the race. “The 5K is not just a race. It binds all the participants in a common pursuit for better more vibrant health. Memories are created in Hopewell which are joyful, meaningful, and lasting. Please join us for this life-changing event.”
The City Point 5K is sponsored by the Hopewell Recreation & Parks Department and by the John Randolph Foundation to bring more awareness of health, particularly heart health, to the community. The John Randolph Foundation is a community-based foundation working to improve the health and quality of life for residents of Hopewell and surrounding areas.
“A race of this size brings people into Hopewell to show off our City,” says Ronnie Parker, athletic supervisor at Hopewell Recreation & Parks and director of the race for seven years. “It’s healthy and it’s entertaining. Many of the participants wear Halloween costumes, which makes it even more fun!” Also, Parker mentioned that the City Point 5K is one of the largest 5k races in Virginia.
Fit for Kids Challenge
The October 25th event also includes a Fit for Kids Challenge, which encourages youth to run or walk 13 miles in the five weeks from September 15 to October 25. The first 12 miles should be completed over the course of the five weeks and the final mile will be completed at the Kids Fun Run/Walk on October 25.
Participants in the Fit for Kids Challenge will track their progress on a Running/Walking Log provided by their teachers. Incentive prizes will be awarded by the students’ physical education teachers at their respective schools at the 6 and 12 mile marks along the way. T-shirts and medals will be awarded for students who run or walk mile 13 at the Kids Fun Run/Walk on October 25. Participants must register for the final mile no later than Friday, October 10 at http://www.citypoint5k.org/ or complete the print-out registration form to your child’s physical education teacher.
Donations benefitting the Hopewell Recreation & Parks Foundation and Hopewell Public School Foundation will be accepted with registration or on race day.
