The threats to safeguarding protected health information are coming from many directions. This event allows the industry to work collaboratively toward comprehensive solutions.-- Bob Chaput, CEO of Clearwater Compliance.

When the 2nd Annual PHI Protection Network (PPN) Conference convenes on April 10, 2014, in Anaheim, California, attendees will collectively tackle the pressing financial burden of data breaches involving protected health information (PHI). Interested organizations can register here.

Clearwater Compliance is among the sponsors for this event, which gathers an interactive group of senior privacy, compliance, and security officers to share best practices and insights for safeguarding the privacy of protected health information (PHI). Additional supporters include ID Experts, Symantec, Accuvant and the Medical Identity Fraud Alliance.

Joanne McNabb, a leading privacy expert with California Department of Justice, will headline an esteemed HIPAA-HITECH faculty, as attendees work to develop tangible, actionable takeaways readily implemented inside their respective healthcare organizations.

Safeguarding the privacy of PHI is a complex, and potentially costly challenge. According to the report The Financial Impact of Breached Protected Health Information: A Business Case for Enhanced PHI Security, the average cost of a data breach is about $200 per patient, translating into costs that can easily top $2 million for a lost laptop with 10,000 patient records. This does not include the harder-to-calculate costs of lost business or lost productivity.

A new industry study published this month tallies potential cost to the healthcare industry of $5.6 billion annually. The Fourth Annual Benchmark Study on Patient Privacy and Data Security by The Ponemon Institute points out that while the Affordable Care Act creates access to insurance for millions of new patients who are now able to join the healthcare system, that also increases the number of electronic medical records at risk in the marketplace. Not to mention, the untested security of the health insurance exchanges.

“Criminal attacks, employee negligence, inconsistent practices among Business Associates – the threats are coming from many directions,” said Bob Chaput, CEO and founder of Clearwater Compliance. “This conference provides a unique opportunity for HIPAA compliance leaders to come together, share best practices and develop joint solutions for better addressing privacy and security risk.”

Organized by PPN, the one-day conference focuses on the complex and changing landscape of PHI privacy and security compliance. PPN is an interactive network of PHI protectors and solutions providers who jointly are advancing the fields of privacy and security.
