Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Realtor Trish Ingels recently listed a historic English Tudor estate, originally built in 1925, located at 44 Polo Drive in Colorado Springs, CO. The estate, the original home of R. Clifford Black of New York, was the architectural design of Hart & Shape of New York, NY. The landscape plan was conceived and supervised by renowned landscape architect S. R. DeBoer, who also designed the Denver Botanical Gardens, and is registered in the Smithsonian Institute.

The English Tudor home, which sits on a 3.13-acre lot overlooking Colorado Springs with views of the Garden of the Gods, features a grand great room, multiple sitting rooms, a spacious kitchen, a servant’s kitchen, and a large formal dining room, among other eclectic areas. Since 1947, when it was sold for $100,000 (the highest price paid for a residential property at that time), the home has undergone major restoration. Its current owners have restored many of the original features and have added numerous sophisticated and modern touches of their own.

During the most recent restoration, the original house plans were found in the basement, along with some of the leaded glass windows that had been removed, which were restored and replaced. The home also includes an Otis elevator and three-car garage. The formal living room has quarter-sewn oak floors, custom concrete beams, three window seats to enjoy the gardens, and two walk-outs to the covered patio and backyard.

“The gourmet kitchen is a true chef’s delight,” noted Ingels. “The custom cabinets are finished with automobile lacquer in candy apple red and include an attached ladder so you can climb to reach those hard-to-get-to shelves. State-of-the-art features include all Viking appliances, granite, stainless steel and maple counters, walk-in cooler, large pantry, desk area, two warming drawers, and a heat lamp. The slate floors and gorgeous box ceiling add just the right touches to finish off this amazing room.”

Just a few feet away from the kitchen is a fully equipped butler’s pantry and an elegant dining room, the walls of which have been upholstered with high-quality fabric, and the entrance features the original carved wood doors. Upstairs the upper-level master retreat has a wood-burning fireplace, 15x15 sitting room that overlooks the gardens, his and her baths, and a walk-in closet. “Her adjoining three-quarter bath features the luxury of marble floors and counters and an oversized soaking tub to ease the tension from her day,” concluded Ingels.
