Despite the Auld Mug eluding Emirates Team New Zealand, the 2013 America’s Cup represents a high water mark for multi-platform viewing in this country.
A record number of Kiwis watch TVNZ’s live coverage – either on TV ONE or streamed online. The regatta was the first major free-to-air sports event offered on desktops, mobile devices and television simultaneously, which brought an exciting new dimension to race coverage.
At its height, TV viewing peaked at 1.2 million and live streaming topped an unprecedented 250,000, which ranks the America’s Cup among TVNZ’s most watched ever programming events.
The quality of the host broadcast coverage from San Francisco coupled with the passion and expertise of TVNZ’s sports production and Breakfast teams brought the competition to life and made the America’s Cup an easily accessible and must watch event across every screen.
“Many advertisers seized the opportunity to be part of the excitement and unique viewing audience that a big event like this attracts,” said TVNZ’s Head of Sales Jeremy O’Brien.
“In particular it was pleasing to deliver exceptional value to a crucial business partner like Toyota who made the broadcast possible in the first instance.”

Over the course of the 8-26 September competition, an average audience of 670,000 people saw the racing on TV ONE; and in total, 1.8 million live streams were served on the http://www.tvnz.co.nz/americascup site.
