The Bob Richardson Law Firm’s Website Calls Attention to Distracted Driving Among Teenagers in Texas
Austin, Texas (PRWEB) August 14, 2014 -- New content on The Bob Richardson Law Firm’s website focuses on the dangers of driving while distracted – particularly for new drivers – and ways parents can help teens avoid distractions behind the wheel, the law firm announced today.
“Our firm is committed to doing everything we can to reduce distracted driving throughout the state,” said Don R. Cotton, a personal injury attorney who focuses on car accident cases in Austin, Waco and surrounding areas.
“The risks of driving while distracted are well-documented, but people continue to do it,” Cotton said. “It’s important that we continue to get the message out, especially to teenagers who are new to driving.”
The firm’s website calls attention to the Texas Department of Transportation’s “Talk/Text CRASH” campaign, which strives to end the dangerous practice of distracted driving. The department reports that in 2013, there were 94,943 car accidents in Texas involving distracted driving, resulting in 18,576 serious injuries and 459 deaths.
The firm’s new web content reports that studies have shown almost a quarter of Texas drivers said they sometimes or regularly read text messages while driving and that drivers who use cellphones are four times more likely to get into a serious car crash, according to a June 17 report from KXAN News.
Examples of common distractions include texting, talking on a cellphone, grooming, changing the radio station, reading and eating and drinking. Texting is among the most dangerous distractions, particularly among young drivers, and is the focus of the campaign.
“Campaigns like this are especially important right now, as studies show people continue to engage in this dangerous behavior,” Cotton said. “Current laws aren’t enough.”
Cotton stressed that parents of new drivers can play an important role in preventing teen motorists from allowing distractions to divert their attention from safe driving.
The new content includes a parent/teen driving contract, a document that lays out responsibilities for teens and their parents, as well as the consequences for not meeting those responsibilities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that teens are the top users of cellphones while also having some of the highest crash rates.
“We’re hoping this contract will encourage parents to talk to their children about safe driving, especially refraining from distractions while behind the wheel,” Cotton said. “Contracts like this one set clear expectations for both parents and teens, and can hopefully save lives.”
