According to a federal Case List updated on August 15th, at least 154 Tylenol lawsuits are now pending in the federal litigation underway in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. These claims involve alleged instances where individuals took the medications and were hospitalized, needed a liver transplant or even died after taking the medication in accordance with label directions.
A Philadelphia Inquirer report from earlier this year calls attention to the dangers associated with acetaminophen. According to the article published in February 2014, toxic reactions related to the Tylenol ingredient result in 78,000 emergency room visits and 33,000 hospitalizations.*
In August 2013, Bloomberg.com reported that acetaminophen contained in certain over the-counter Tylenol products exceeded the amount limited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) two years earlier for prescription drugs. The federal agency announced in 2011 that these medications were not to contain more than 325 mg of acetaminophen per tablet, but placed no such cap on over-the-counter products. Extra Strength Tylenol tablets each contain 500 mg of the ingredient, according to Bloomberg.**
