Plans have been submitted to the Allerdale Borough Council that could see hundreds of much-needed new homes developed on unused land off Ashfield Road South, Workington. The site was allocated for housing in Allerdale’s Local Plan 1999 and has since lain empty.
Outline planning permission was submitted on 1st December, 2014 by planning consultancy Turley on behalf of Allerdale Investment Partnership (AIP), following a comprehensive consultation process – including a drop-in session at the Moorclose Community Centre – where local residents were encouraged to provide their views on all aspects of the proposed development.
The proposed plan could deliver up to 290 new family homes to meet local needs, including affordable homes for first-time buyers, key workers and the elderly. AIP has promoted the benefits of the scheme that include the creation of much-needed high-quality homes and a potential increase in consumer expenditure as new residents move into the area.

If the outline planning permission is successful, then the site will be sold to a housing developer, where more details on the type of housing will be confirmed.
A decision is expected in early 2015.
