United Asset Strategies, Inc. starts by sorting through macroeconomic research to highlight interesting geographic trends that might prove influential to specific industries in different countries. Next, individual companies are singled out to uncover stocks with the best looking financial health. “We take a decidedly top-down approach to building out client portfolios,” says DeLorenzo.

Only then does technical analysis come into play for her research team, which includes two technicians. A primary set of statistics they consider is relative strength, which measures how a stock is trading relative to its peers. UASI’s TA experts also look at price charts that plot general trends – such as moving averages – over different periods. “Generally when a stock is trading below its 200-day moving average, that’s a bad sign,” says Thomas Laviano, one of the firm’s technical analysts. Primarily, he views TA as benefiting portfolio managers and advisors at the firm by providing confirmation they’ve made the right buy and sell decisions.
