New York/Berlin (PRWEB) September 18, 2013 -- artnet Auctions is pleased to present Urban Scrawl: Graffiti and Street Art, a sale of multi-media works from leading graffiti and street artists, including Banksy, Shepard Fairey, CRASH, FAILE, Ron English, JonOne, Rammellzee, Ian Francis, and Keith Haring, with estimates ranging from US$1,500–65,000.
Included in the sale is the highly sought-after Banksy (British, b. ca.1974) screenprint, Kate Moss (2005). Presented in the original colorway, this satirical take on Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe series features supermodel Kate Moss as the present day sex symbol. Often drawing comparisons to Warhol, Banksy’s distinctive, guerrilla style and witty critiques of politics and society have brought Street Art into the mainstream and made him one of the most recognizable names in Contemporary Art, even as his identity remains anonymous.
Another highlight of the Urban Scrawl sale is a unique Shepard Fairey (American, b.1970) spray paint, stencil, and collage work on paper depicting punk fashion legend Vivienne Westwood. Featured in Shepard Fairey’s book Obey: Supply and Demand—The Art of Shepard Fairey (2006), Vivienne Westwood (2005) showcases the influential street artist’s innovative stencil work and brilliant use of collage. Estimated at US$35,000–55,000, this multifaceted portrait demonstrates Fairey’s intricate imagery that inspire the viewer to look deeper.
In addition to Shepard Fairey’s work on paper, the sale will also feature significant works by other renowned graffiti and street artists, including FAILE and CRASH. In Stories of Love (2008), Brooklyn-based artist collaboration FAILE incorporates found imagery and collage techniques in this large-scale acrylic and screenprint work on canvas, estimated at US$40,000–60,000. Inspired by art historical traditions and Pop Art icons such as Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997), FAILE explores themes of mass-media and popular culture. The use of Pop imagery is also wonderfully displayed in That Old Art Pimp (1986) by pioneering graffiti artist CRASH. Estimated at US$25,000–35,000, this vibrant portrait of Sidney Janis, one of the first dealers to collect and exhibit Graffiti Art in the 1980s, is exemplary of CRASH’s characteristic cartoonish style.
The sale will also include works by some of today’s leaders in the Urban Art scene, including Ian Francis, JonOne, Zevs, Jose Parla, Cope 2, and Ron English.
