Voices Against Brain Cancer Commends Foundation for Providing Grants to Young Researchers Researching Pediatric Brain Cancer
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 12, 2013 -- Voices Against Brain Cancer, an organization dedicated to brain cancer research and advocacy, commends the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for providing young researchers with the funds needed to continue their pediatric brain cancer research.
According to an August 31, 2013 article published by Jacksonville.com titled “Money from lemonade stands helps fund pediatric brain cancer research,” Takahisa Kanekiyo, a Japanese researcher at the Mayo Clinic, who is currently studying cerebral vascular disease, was just awarded a $100,000 grant “to study glioma, an extremely aggressive brain tumor with a survival rate of only 15 to 35 percent after five years – and its occurrence in children.”
This grant was provided by the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a national nonprofit organization that is dedicated to finding cures for kids with all types of cancer, the article says. It was started by Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who passed away at the age of 8 from neuroblastoma, a common type of brain cancer in children. The foundation raises money through lemonade stands nationwide, toting the motto “one cup at a time.”
“This grant is very helpful to my research,” says Kanekiyo in the article. “Research is very costly and money is hard to come by, especially for young investigators.”
Michael Klipper, chairman of Voices Against Brain Cancer, an organization dedicated to brain cancer research and advocacy, says, “Unfortunately, general knowledge of pediatric brain cancer is widely limited. With The Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation’s continued efforts, along with many other organizations dedicated to funding cancer research, today’s scientists and researchers will be able to receive the funding needed to conduct vital and effective research that will get us closer to finding a cure.”
VABC has a wide variety of initiatives in place for brain cancer research, awareness and support. The organization’s research grants fund cutting-edge research programs that will have a monumental impact on the diagnosis and treatment of brain cancer. VABC currently funds research at several esteemed institutions such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cleveland Clinic, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, John Hopkins, Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Yale, to name a few.
VABC's mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.
