"We’re just finding new ways to get the products we already sell into the hands of our consumers.” - Peter Quinn, Retail Projects Manager

In the last few years Alberta-based pharmacies have experienced many government regulated changes that have affected the profitability of their business.
However, none of these changes have stopped Value Drug Mart Associates Ltd. from starting up new and innovative projects in an attempt to counter balance the losses seen in pharmacy.
Back to School Solutions, launched in 2009, targets the school supply industry, while valuevalet.com, launched in 2012, offers over 10,000 products online to consumers across Canada.
“The changes to the pharmacy side of our business made it imperative for us to find new opportunities,” says Peter Quinn, Manager of Retail Projects. “But make no mistake, both projects build on our company’s strengths. We’re just finding new ways to get the products we already sell into the hands of our consumers.”
Back to School Solutions is a direct-to-consumer school supply business. It is a one-stop-shop for parents to order school supplies and have them delivered directly to their child’s school. In their first year, Back to School Solutions served seven schools in Alberta and in 2014 they are serving over 100 schools across B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
In late 2012, the Alberta-based company launched its retail e-commerce site, Value Valet, expanding its market to all of Canada–selling health and beauty products to consumers in all 10 provinces and three territories. Although still in its infancy, Value Valet has seen a good response from Canadians, with its largest market in Ontario.
“These new ventures were driven by a combination of change in the Alberta pharmacy industry and a change in Canadian consumer habits,” says Quinn. “But change is also an opportunity for growth and we’ve embraced the challenge.”
