Varicose veins may be an unattractive and painful condition, but according to an article published April 19th on The National, it is actually quite common among a great many men and women. Moreover, it is easier to treat than ever before, thanks to modern technology.

According to Northwest Vein & Aesthetic Center, a brand new, FDA-approved method of vein treatment called Venaseal is available and is a highly effective heatless technology that uses chemical energy to block off affected veins. Compared to previous treatments, Venaseal eliminates the risk of thermal damage and may render anesthesia unnecessary. What’s more, patients can expect less discomfort and bruising than compared to other types of leading edge varicose vein treatment, return to full activity immediately without need to wear compression socks afterwards.

In order to inform the public, the treatment center dispels some of the many myths about varicose veins:

  • One of the most common misconceptions is that varicose veins are only a cosmetic concern, explains Dr. Robert Kim at Northwest Vein & Aesthetic Center. The reality is that they can indeed have a negative impact on a patient’s quality of life by causing pain, itching, cramps, throbbing, and aching. Fortunately, many patients with this condition can have it treated by a minimally invasive procedure that can close them in an office visit. And, while this concern is more prevalent among people who are overweight and in women of childbearing age, varicose veins can actually appear in people of all body types, as well as men, too. Fortunately, for a great many people, varicose veins are unattractive but actually quite harmless, the center notes.
  • Contrary to popular belief, factors such as tight clothing and hot weather do not cause varicose veins. In fact, specialized clothing such as elastic compression socks are occasionally prescribed in order to treat the condition. In hot climates, because the blood vessels relax in order to regulate body temperature, varicose veins may appear more visible and prominent. When it comes to prevention, regular cardiovascular exercise is recommended. Interestingly, crossing one’s legs while sitting is thought to cause varicose veins, but there is no scientific evidence to support this.
