Hospice Volunteer Training Program Offers Rewarding Opportunity
Basking Ridge, NJ (PRWEB) August 16, 2017 -- The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Somerset Hills is offering an opportunity for men and women to train as hospice volunteers. Volunteers provide much needed joy, support and assistance to patients and their families dealing with life-limiting illness. For over 30 years, the agency has trained volunteers to be vital members of the interdisciplinary hospice care team. A hospice volunteer provides support to patients and caregivers. Responsibilities may include companionship visits, running errands, pet therapy visits, respite for caregivers, or help with administrative work at the agency. No previous hospice or healthcare experience is necessary.
Beginning October 12, 2017, the free training program will run for four consecutive Thursdays from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the VNA headquarters at 200 Mt. Airy Road in Basking Ridge. Volunteers will gain an overall understanding of the hospice philosophy and the volunteer’s role. The curriculum, presented in a supportive environment, includes introduction to hospice and palliative care, patient and family care, communication, and grief and bereavement.
“Volunteers are invaluable members of the hospice care team at the VNA,” said Kristin Pirich, Coordinator of Volunteers at the VNA of Somerset Hills. “In addition to providing respite and comfort to others, our volunteers find that participation in the hospice program offers them a deeply rewarding and life-changing experience.”
Pre-registration is required and is open now through September 21, 2017. For more information, contact Kristin Pirich, Coordinator of Volunteers, at 908-766-0180 ext. 115 or email kpirich(at)visitingnurse(dot)org.
