What price are people willing to pay to get their family to safety? And what risks will a government and its agencies take to preserve national security? In his thrilling novel, author Walter Jung weaves together one man’s need for his family’s safety and one nation’s efforts to preserve national security into a gripping storyline. “Ashes From Last Hell” will keep readers at the edge of their seats.

In this book, a high party member who sought his liberation from the North’s dictatorship left his deathbed wish to be buried in the South. His son, by offering his strategic information, gets the help of the South’s intelligence for a triple breakout: his mother in Pyongyang, his son in Almaty and himself in D.C. The breakout story focuses, with humanity, on those people trapped after the liberation and their desperate efforts to flee the hellish dictatorship. Will this be successfully carried out?

Jung aims to raise interest on the serious political conditions of the Korean peninsula. This novel explores the intricacies of the intelligence operation with backdrop of human dimension. It vividly portrays the plight of those separated Korean families since the liberation in 1945 and dangers that high level defectors face in seeking freedom and political asylum.

A heart-pounding read, “Ashes From Last Hell” minimizes violence and emphasizes the human side.
