During the Cold War, a young American girl wrestles with the challenges of a military family always on the move. Exposure to historic places, frequent travel, and 14 moves in 10 years encourage her to see the world in a different way than her parents do. Her experiences span from Alaska with earthquakes and Aurora Borealis, to the two-storied Japanese house in Nara where Mama-San expects her for tea Saturday mornings, and a horrifying visit to Hiroshima; and then to Munich, an unexpected visit to Dachau and a Mediterranean cruise.
In the midst of different landscapes, her father exhibits symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s a life author Mary Lou Darst chronicles in her book, “War Ready: In My Father’s Shadow” (published by iUniverse). The story is enhanced with quotes from the diary.
Darst believes readers will connect with the story, as families welcoming soldiers home from the Middle East may find their loved ones experiencing symptoms of PTSD.
