In “Thomas Fairchild: Puritan Merchant & Magistrate” (published by iUniverse), author and historian W. Bruce Fairchild shares his family’s incredible legacy with the story for the founder of Stratford, Conn., Thomas Fairchild.
“I have drawn upon 15 years of research and hundreds of authoritative sources in England and the United States in order to portray the mind-boggling events surrounding the Great Migration to the New World in the 1630s,” says Bruce.
Thoroughly researched, “Thomas Fairchild” recounts the fascinating life and times of Thomas Fairchild and his many contributions to the early American colonies. As a Puritan fleeing persecution in England, Thomas and his first wife, Emma, settled in Connecticut where Thomas became the founder, local merchant and magistrate of Stratford.
While Stratford and its people struggle to survive, Thomas faces personal tragedy when Emma dies, leaving him with six young children. Thomas returns to England and marries Katherine, and they return to Stratford. For the remainder of his life, Thomas would be instrumental in laying the foundation for what would one day become the United States.
“Thomas Fairchild” captures the emotional turmoil of the period and well as the political changes in England and its colonies. Bruce breaks through the stereotypes of the Puritan pioneers and reveals the hardships and dangers they faced while creating the new world.
“Modern Americans can be justly proud of their history, now stretching into the fifth century,” says Bruce. “The pioneering deeds of America’s first recorded settlers and their descendants, renewed by the blood of later immigrants, have made the United States into the greatest nation on earth.”
