Dr. Millard Syverain and the team at Weight Loss Management have been encouraging people to start the day with a good breakfast and to avoid large meals at night. A recent research study conducted by Brigham and Women's Hospital, in collaboration with the University of Murcia and Tufts University, seems to support this idea.

In Europe, 420 individuals participated in a weight-loss study over four months. They were divided into two groups: those who ate their biggest meal in the middle of the day and those who ate their biggest meal in the evening. The study revealed that those in the early-lunch group lost more weight by the end of four months than those who ate their biggest meal later on. Both groups took in about the same amounts of calories per day. Researchers also looked at other variables, such as participants’ energy expenditure and their intake of carbohydrates, protein and fat, as well as sleep patterns. Dr. Syverain says that eating breakfast can help jumpstart metabolism in the morning, which is at its lowest after sleeping. A large breakfast provides food that will be used for energy throughout the day. Using the food for energy is much better than the alternative of food being stored as fat, as it can be later in the day.

Breakfast can also help those with diabetes. Breakfast helps diabetics still to a routine that includes checking fasting blood glucose levels and taking prescribed medications.

Dr. Syverain notes that some people aren’t hungry in the morning. This may be because they ate too much the evening before. Dr. Syverain suggests eating less in the evening or trying a protein shake in the morning for those who are still not hungry or don’t want to eat a huge breakfast meal. His advice is to eat something within one hour of getting up and eating more food during the day and less during the evening.
