New Jersey victims and survivors of domestic violence will be honored and remembered as a way to reaffirm community commitment to ending abuse and violence.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, New Jersey’s Center for Hope and Safety (formerly Shelter Our Sisters) will hold a candlelight vigil and dedication ceremony for the Center’s Pathway to Self Sufficiency at Van Saun County Park New Jersey on October 23, 2014, from 5:30-6:30 pm.

The event is free and the public is cordially invited to attend. During the vigil, victims and survivors of domestic violence will be honored and remembered as a way to reaffirm community commitment to ending abuse and violence.

Reflections and candle lighting will take place at the Center for Hope and Safety Pathway to Self-Sufficiency, found adjacent to parking lot 4. The Center for Hope and Safety’s Pathway to Self-Sufficiency is a garden and brick walkway created in partnership with the County of Bergen, Department of Parks. The Pathway honors the journey survivors of domestic violence make on their way to self-sufficiency. It also memorializes those who did not survive. Personalized memorial bricks are available for purchase through the Center for Hope and Safety.

October 23 also marks a state-wide observance of Purple Thursday, the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Purple awareness bracelets will be distributed at the vigil for everyone, courtesy of Weinberger Law Group.
