WellCare Donates $50,000 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness to Advance Peer Support for Recovery
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) September 10, 2013 -- WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG) today announced that the WellCare Community Foundation has donated $50,000 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization.
The donation will be divided between the national organization and three NAMI state organizations. In the states, the donation will support NAMI’s Peer-to-Peer Recovery Program. Nationally, the donation will help support the organization’s annual research event.
Across Florida, South Carolina and New York, the donation will help certify 38 mentors and help host 15 support classes. The Peer-to-Peer program is an experiential learning opportunity for people with mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining their recovery and wellness. As part of the program, participants attend a series of courses taught by two trained mentors and a volunteer support person who have personal experience in living well with mental illness.
“WellCare focuses on the overall health and wellbeing of our members and the communities in which they live,” said Dr. Steven Goldberg, senior vice president and chief medical officer for WellCare. “By coordinating the delivery of health care and working with community partners like NAMI, we strive to help people receive the right care at the right time in the most appropriate setting.”
There are more than 1,000 local NAMI affiliates in communities across the country and in Puerto Rico. To find the closest NAMI state organization or NAMI affiliate, please visit http://www.nami.org. For more information about the Peer-to-Peer Recovery Program call 1-800-950-6264.
