Missouri Care Donates $10,000 to Nine Federally Qualified Health Centers
Tampa, Fla. (PRWEB) September 25, 2013 -- Missouri Care, a subsidiary of WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG), celebrated National Health Centers Week by donating a total of $10,000 to nine Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) throughout the state. The $500-$1000 donations helped the FQHCs to promote general wellness by providing immunizations, dental cleanings and checkups, health screenings, and family activities at their facilities during a recent week-long, annual event.
FQHCs are community-based organizations that provide comprehensive primary and preventive health care including oral, mental and substance abuse services to people of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay. These organizations have compiled a significant record of success by reducing income and ethnic health disparities nationwide, reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and visits to the emergency room, and generating a system of preventive medicine that people use regularly to stay healthy. FQHCs serve more than 22 million people nationwide.
“When people have a place to go for regular care, they use it and stay healthier,” said Hilda Fuentes, CEO of Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center. “Our patients not only get the care they need under one roof, but they are treated as individuals, with dignity and respect. This is what health care should be and what we celebrate during National Health Centers Week.”
“Missouri Care is proud to support organizations that focus on improving the health of Medicaid beneficiaries enrolled in managed care,” said Pamela Johnson, president of Missouri Care. “Education and access to preventive care can make a significant difference in their quality of life and helps to reduce the overall cost of health care.”
The nine FQHCs that received donations from Missouri Care are Community Health Center, Jefferson City; Family Care Health Centers, St. Louis; Family Health Center, Columbia; Grace Hill Health Centers, St. Louis; Katy Trail Community Health, Sedalia; Myrtle Hilliard Davis Comprehensive Health Centers, St. Louis; People’s Health Centers, St. Louis; Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center, Kansas City; Swope Health, Kansas City.
