Habitat For Humanity And WellCare Help Revitalize East Tampa Homes
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) March 04, 2014 -- Approximately 70 volunteers from WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG) helped revitalize the homes of two East Tampa women as part of Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County, Inc.’s “A Brush with Kindness” event on March 1. The program assists elderly, disabled and low-income homeowners who are unable to adequately maintain the exterior of their homes.
WellCare employees, family and friends painted, landscaped and performed minor repairs to the homes. The homeowners received additional renovation services from The Centre for Women.
“I am so blessed to have been helped by The Centre and now Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County,” said Hazel, one of the homeowners. “I have a new roof, shower and now my home is beautiful and safe on the outside.”
Habitat for Humanity added restoration services to their core homebuilding initiative in order to preserve existing affordable housing, build community connections and strengthen personal dignity and neighborhood pride.
“It starts with one or two homes on a street, which in turn becomes the catalyst for the revitalization of an entire neighborhood,” said Jackie Buckler, executive director for Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County. “We are thankful for WellCare’s support as we continue in our mission to build lives and build hope.”
“People often cannot focus on maintaining their health when they are working to meet their basic needs for shelter, food and clothing,” said Lisa Iglesias, president of the WellCare Community Foundation. “Partnerships with organizations like Habitat for Humanity are central to WellCare’s commitment to connect our members with the social services they need to live better, healthier lives.”
As of January 2014, WellCare serves approximately 404,000 Medicaid plan members, 82,000 Florida Healthy Kids members, 83,000 Medicare Advantage plan members and 55,000 Medicare Prescription Drug Plan members in Florida.
