US Stocks Rise on Greece Deal As World Patent Marketing Issues White Paper On Greek Contributions to Invention, Innovation and Humanity
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 14, 2015 -- World Patent Marketing, a vertically integrated manufacturer and distributor of patented products, issues a white paper and congratulates Greece and the European Union for coming to a unanimous agreement.
The basis of the white paper is on how Greek ingenuity has contributed to the world in such a great way. It is surprising to learn how many significant world-changing innovations are ancient Greek inventions.
Geometry and Mathematics -- We can thank the Pythagoreans and Euclid for abstract mathematics, like the theory of right triangles and the ability to measure the diameter of circles. You could even say they invented music with the theory of harmonics that gives us the musical scale.
Logic -- The philosophers get credit for giving us logic. Without the work of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, one can hardly imagine the development of the scientific method that all of our modern science relies upon.
Waterscrew -- The waterscrew was developed by Archimedes for drawing water up from wells and pools. It consists of a large screw encased in a pipe which when turned draws the water to the top. When turned on its side and placed under a boat, the screw becomes a propeller. Imagine, the propellers that send huge ships across the sea, is a twist on one of the most important ancient Greek inventions. And it is over 2200 years old!
Odometer -- The odometer was invented by Archimedes as well, another one of many Greek inventions. It is the precursor to those handy step counters that you can now wear on your arm, or the odometer in your car. It operated by counting the revolutions of a wheel on a cart, and from that could make an accurate calculation of distance. It was incredibly important in building roads and large fortifications. But the most important aspect of the odometer is that it allowed for the creation of maps.
Maps -- With the invention of the odometer, it was suddenly possible to make accurate maps of local areas. Believe it or not, maps were virtually unknown before the Greeks combined the idea of a picture with the information from their travels and odometers.
Crane -- The crane was used for building in ancient Greece, just as it is today. Of course ancient cranes didn't have the strength of modern steel or the power that comes from petroleum, but it is one of the Greek inventions that made Greece's fabulous temples and architecture possible.
Lever -- The lever makes it possible to move large objects with relatively little force. It's a simply brilliant invention that is essential for manufacturing and building. And yet another invention that came to us from the ancient Greeks.
Wheelbarrow -- It might seem like a simple object, but the wheelbarrow was one of the most significant inventions in history. It was fairly easy to build and easy to use, capable of working down rows of crops and over rough unpaved roads. And it doubled what a man could carry while minimizing the effort. Yet another of the great Greek inventions.
Cannon -- Metal cannons weren't perfected until much later, but the Greeks had wood cannons which used air pressure to hurl projectiles. They were the first nation to experiment with the laws governing air pressure, the field which is today known as pneumatics, the Greek word for air or breath.
Medicine -- Hippocrates didn't invent medicine, but he is known as the first physician because he systematically gathered all of the known medical information and put it all together in what we know today as the Hippocratic Texts. He is also credited with creating the physician's oath, we call it the Hippocratic Oath. Most famously it commands that doctors "do no harm." This has been the foundation statement of the medical profession for more than 2000 years.
These are the great ideas and technologies that our entire civilization rests upon. We owe a great debt to the early Greeks. Yet, great inventions come from all over the world every day. People everywhere have great ideas.
