First of More Than 1,200 Wright Hip Lawsuits Goes to Trial in California Superior Court

According to court documents, opening statements were presented on May 28th, with the plaintiff’s attorney asserting that laser etchings on the Profemur hip replacement made the device brittle and prone to fracture, causing it to snap just three years after it had been implanted in his client. Since experiencing the fracture of his Profemur hip in 2010, the plaintiff has undergone 14 surgeries due to dislocations and infection, and will need to have his current artificial hip replaced in the near future. Court filings indicate that the majority of claims involving Wright Conserve hip replacements have been filed in a federal multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Georgia. Plaintiffs in those lawsuits alleges that recipients of the metal-on-metal Conserve implants are at risk for metallosis, pseudotumor formation, premature device failure, and other serious complications that often result in a need to surgically remove and replace the hip implant.
