A California woman has filed a new Xarelto lawsuit (http://www.xareltolawsuitcenter.com) that alleges uncontrollable hemorrhaging caused by the blood thinner nearly ended her life, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to her complaint, which was filed in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York on August 29th, the woman had only been taking the medication for a few months before she allegedly suffered a severe Xarelto bleeding event in August 2012. The Plaintiff further alleges that the complications caused by Xarelto resulted in permanent injuries, pain and suffering, and the need for life-long medical treatment. (Case1:14-cv-05133-FB-RML)

Among other things, the lawsuit points out that the manufacturers of Xarelto marketed the drug as a superior alternative to warfarin, despite the fact that there currently exists no approved antidote to reverse internal bleeding that can sometimes accompany its use. By contrast, warfarin bleeding can be stopped via the administration of vitamin K. The lawsuit alleges that the label for Xarelto did not include adequate warnings regarding the lack of a reversal agent.

“This is just the most recent Xarelto lawsuit filings to put forth these types of allegations. Our Firm has also heard from a number of individuals who claim to have experienced severe bleeding complications that echo those cited in this complaint,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering Xarelto case reviews to people who allegedly suffered serious injuries from the blood thinner, including uncontrollable bleeding, strokes, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.

Xarelto Lawsuits
According to Reuters, the manufacturers of Xarelto have acknowledged that the blood thinner is the subject of a number of product liability claims pending in U.S. courts.* The medication was launched in the U.S. in 2011, and is now approved to prevent strokes in people with atrial fibrillation; as a treatment for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; and to prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery. **

Among other things, the new Xarelto lawsuit filing in New York points out that by the end of the 2012 fiscal year, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) had received 2,081 reports of Xarelto complications, including 151 that resulted in death. By contrast, only 56 warfarin-related deaths were reported to the agency during the same time period.

In August, a study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery found that internal bleeding associated with Xarelto is more difficult to stop when compared to some other blood thinners. Among other things, the medication has a short half-life, requiring doctors to act more quickly to manage brain bleeds. The study also found that dialysis is not an effective way to reverse Xarelto bleeding.***
