Even if you’re not currently exercising regularly, make the commitment to do something as simple as going for a walk. If you feel better afterwards, use that as a spring board and commit to repeating it two or three times a week.
Wixom, MI (PRWEB) May 12, 2015
Wednesday, May 27, 2015 is designated as National Senior Health & Fitness Day®, and DiaperBuys, a national online retailer of incontinence supplies, is encouraging seniors everywhere to take advantage of this day to get out and enjoy a favorite activity.
“As we age, it’s increasingly important to find ways to stay active, which can be a challenge, particularly if you have physical limitations,” explains Beth Shollenberger, RN, Education and Community Outreach Manager for DiaperBuys.com. “However, activity can help with a number of conditions, and regular activity is also one of the best ways to improve mood and maintain cognitive function.”
The National Senior Health & Fitness Day event is in its 22nd year. More than 100,000 seniors will participate at events across the country. The goals of the designated day are to emphasize the importance of regular activity and showcase opportunities for communities to improve the health and fitness of older adults.
“Knowing that physical activity and movement can help seniors maintain a healthy weight, and reduce or alleviate certain conditions, including those like Type 2 Diabetes that can lead to kidney problems and incontinence, we are encouraging seniors everywhere to take advantage of this special day set aside to focus on physical fitness,” explains Shollenberger. “Even if you’re not currently exercising regularly, make the commitment to do something as simple as going for a walk. If you feel better afterwards, use that as a spring board and commit to repeating it two or three times a week.”
“If you’re already active, get out there and pick an activity you enjoy to celebrate the day. “Play golf, do some gardening, or go for a swim. Check out local events for the day in your area. If you don’t find any, head to the local Y, a park, or a community pool.”
Many local organizations plan activities to mark the day, including state and local agencies on aging, banks, churches, gyms and health clubs, hospitals, malls, parks and recreation departments, senior centers and retirement communities.
The theme for this year’s National Senior Health & Fitness Day is, “If You Keep Moving, You’ll Keep Improving!” Schollenberger agrees wholeheartedly with this sentiment. “With everything we know about the advantages of all forms of exercise, including something as simple as walking, it’s wonderful to see that there is a day set aside to remind seniors everywhere of the importance of exercise. At DiaperBuys, we are well aware that achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of bladder control problems, and for most people, exercise plays a big role in weight loss and maintenance.”
For those who struggle with exercise due to incontinence issues, Schollenberger stresses that there are numerous adult incontinence products, including briefs, liners and pads, to assist those who must manage their symptoms in continuing to enjoy their favorite activities.
“If you’re unsure about which products will best meet your needs, don’t hesitate to give us a call,” she concludes. “We have health professionals at the ready to offer advice about fit, dryness, and comfort levels, and can recommend the correct adult incontinence supplies to help keep you moving an enjoying just about any form of physical activity you enjoy.”
