Angel Taveras to Speak at Northeastern University Symposium, “Accessing Democracy: How Law Shapes and Influences Our Elections”
Boston (PRWEB) March 07, 2016 -- Angel Taveras, a shareholder in Greenberg Traurig LLP’s Boston office and former Providence, Rhode Island mayor, will speak at Northeastern University Law Journal’s annual symposium, “Accessing Democracy: How Law Shapes and Influences Our Elections,” March 11, 2016. Hosted by the Northeastern University School of Law, the conference will discuss the increasing role of money in politics, the use of gerrymandering to influence elections, and the implementation of voter registration and identification laws as a means to alter the electorate. Taveras will discuss Rhode Island’s voter identification law on a panel entitled, “Voting Access and Voter Identification Laws.” Julie Eberstein, staff attorney from the American Civil Liberties Union, and Atiba Ellis, law professor from West Virginia University College of Law, will join him on the panel.
Taveras, an experienced litigator with extensive experience in election litigation, was the first Latino mayor elected in the State of Rhode Island. After a contentious redistricting process in 2012, Mayor Taveras signed a redistricting ordinance which increased the number of majority Latino City Council wards from four to six to better reflect the city's growing Latino population. As an election lawyer, Taveras has appeared before local boards of canvassers, the Rhode Island Board of Elections, the Rhode Island Superior Court, and the Rhode Island Supreme Court on matters related to elections. He has represented Democrat and Republican candidates alike in election matters.
At Greenberg Traurig, Taveras focuses his practice on municipal restructuring, public finance, commercial litigation, pension litigation, and public infrastructure. He has over 14 years of experience in litigation and has dealt with complex commercial matters, bankruptcy litigation, zoning and land use, shareholder disputes, and election recounts and challenges.
