Lawrence Teicher, founder of CFO Consulting Services, LLC, a part time CFO services company, comments on an article published by Fox Business on September 13th, which discusses the best way for a small business to choose a tax professional.

According to the Fox Business article titled “Tips for Choosing a Tax Professional,” many small business owners must rely on external accountants to handle all of their tax information. However, it can be difficult when choosing a professional. While they are expected to act with honest and integrity, many independent tax professionals take short cuts, leaving companies in “hot water” with the IRS, the article says.

Lawrence Teicher, founder of CFO Consulting Services, a leading part time CFO services company, says that often times people masquerade as tax professionals. Teicher agrees with the article, citing that credentials and referrals from trusted sources are the most important factors when hiring a tax professional.

“There are many pretenders out there without certifications,” he says. “If you are a business looking for an accountant or help with your taxes, you should start by asking for some proof of experience or certification. It’s best to hire a CPA or a part time CFO.. Registered tax preparers are probably not your best bet, as they only have to complete a minimum number of hours of training.”

Teicher also says it’s important to be smart. “When you hire someone, you should always monitor their activities,” he says. “You want to make sure they are not doing anything without your consent. Don’t hand over your credit card so easily and don’t indulge in promises that seem too good to be true. Ultimately, the business owner is responsible for the information contained in their tax return. ”

CFO Consulting Services, LLC provides outsourced, part-time CFO services on an as-needed basis to both small and mid-sized businesses located in the NY metropolitan region.
